Population Policy Press

Projects somewhere in the pipeline:

1) The views of members of the British royal household on population policy.

Both TRH, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and Prince Charles have spoken out loud and clear in speeches on the the urgent need to deal promptly, honestly, and effectively with the population problem and related issues. Here this material is reprinted and linked to a brief exposition of the main findings of the UK Royal Commission on Population under Royal Warrant from HM King George VI

2) Dr E F Schumacher – of ‘Small is Beautiful’ fame – on the population problem.

This is based on the writings of this author, on letters and personal discussions, and on his early close relationship with the newly formed Conservation Society in the mid-1960s, rapidly followed by a complete break. Despite his deep conviction that human groups should be as small as possible consistent with remaining economically viable, Dr Schumacher was strongly opposed to any concern about rapid population growth or overlarge size.

This historical material is linked in with the views on the population question of the Schumacher Society, set up to preserve and develop his teachings.

3) The Millionaire Barrier.

This will be based on a reprint, with full updating and an expanded analysis, of my Conservation Trust monograph, The Economic Transition, published in 1977. The original showed that economic growth was extremely slow throughout the vast range of human history and that it cannot possibly carry on much longer; in the very near future we must find and pursue much better social and economic goals.

4) Calls for population control by Third World Leaders

In the view of PPP, His Holiness the Dalai Lama is the only world leader at the present time who combines the necessary qualities of concern, perception, understanding, and courage to speak out frankly on what is crystal clear to him, the fact that human population numbers have to be balanced against resources if an acceptable quality of life is to be attained. However, many other distinguished leaders have spoken out from time to time on this same theme, and this monograph is intended to set forth their very plain-spoken views to show that calls for population control policies by no means emanate solely from the West.
