A joint reprint of a substantial article by Jack Parsons originally published
in two instalments in Population & Environment in 1989. These two
terms – along with ‘economic growth’ – are widely used without clear
definitions or consistency and with little reference to ecological and economic
reality. The outcome is highly dysfunctional for both ethical and ecological
understanding and the development process itself.
